More Room Without Moving

Home Additions That Match Your Baton Rouge House

An addition is new construction tied into an older house. Getting that joint right is most of the job.

When a Baton Rouge family runs out of room, moving isn't always the answer — not when you like the school, the neighbors, and the yard. An addition gives you the bedroom, bathroom, or garage you're missing without leaving the street. We build out from the back or side, up to a second story, or enclose a patio you already have.

Bobby Smith has 19 years of construction experience, and the goal on every addition is the same: it should look like it was always part of the house. That means matching the roofline, the brick, and the floor height. Before you sketch anything, read our home addition planning guide for what to settle first.

Running Out of Room?

Why Baton Rouge Families Build Home Additions

If any of these sound familiar, adding on may make more sense than buying a bigger house.

  1. Not Enough Bedrooms for the Family

A bedroom addition off the back or side gives a growing family the space it needs.

  2. One Bathroom for the Whole House

A bathroom addition, or a full primary suite, ends the morning line at the door.

  3. No Garage or Covered Parking

We build attached and detached garages and carports to keep cars out of the sun and hail.

  4. Patio Too Hot or Buggy to Use

A sunroom or patio enclosure turns a patio into a room you can use most of the year.

  5. Aging Parent Needs a Room

A ground-floor suite with its own bath and a step-free entry keeps family close and comfortable.

From Sketch to Move-In

How a Home Addition Gets Built

Four steps. The wall between old and new stays closed until the addition is weather-tight.

  1. Yard and House Walk-Around

We look at the house, the yard, and property lines, and talk through size and budget.

  2. Addition Plans and Permit Filing

Drawings are made, the price is put in writing, and we file for the permit.

  3. Addition Framing and Roof Tie-In

The new foundation goes in, walls are framed, and the roof is tied into the old one.

  4. Opening the Wall and Finishing

We cut through to the house last, then finish floors, trim, and paint to match.

Adding On in South Louisiana

Local Rules and Conditions for Baton Rouge Home Additions

Lot lines, flood maps, and heavy rain all shape where and how an addition gets built.

Setbacks and Lot Lines

Zoning sets how close you can build to the property line. We check before drawing anything.

Additions in Flood Zones

A large addition in a mapped flood zone can trigger elevation rules for the house. We check early.

Matching Older Baton Rouge Brick

Older brick is hard to find. We source a close match or plan a clean break.

Roof Tie-Ins and Heavy Rain

Where the new roof meets the old is where leaks start. We flash and slope it carefully.

Cooling a New Room Addition

Your current AC may not handle extra square footage. We size the cooling before the walls close.

Second Stories on Slab Homes

Adding a floor puts more weight on the foundation and walls. They need to be checked by an engineer first.

BANKROLL GINO

Google Review

"I used Precise Design Construction for my investment property. This was only the second property that I have purchased and rehabbed. The first time my experience was not good, but that was due to my contractor. This time around, I used Precise Design Construction, and they were with me step by step in this process. The best part was their communication, professionalism and of quality of work. I highly recommend them and will be using them with my next purchase again."

Questions About Adding On

Home Addition FAQs

Is it cheaper to build out or build up when adding on to my house?

Building out is usually cheaper if you have the yard for it. Building up saves yard space but means reinforcing the structure, adding stairs, and opening the roof to the weather for a while. On a small lot with tight setbacks, up may be the only choice.

Will the new addition match my existing brick and roof?

That's the goal. We match roof pitch, shingle color, trim, and window style. Brick is the hard one — old brick is often out of production, so we hunt for the closest match or use siding on the addition in a way that looks planned. You approve samples first.

Can you turn my carport into a garage or an enclosed room?

Often, yes. The slab and roof are already there, which saves money, but the slab needs to be checked for height and cracks, and the posts may need real footings. Enclosing it as living space also means insulation, wiring, and cooling, plus a permit from the parish.

Do I need a permit for a home addition in East Baton Rouge Parish?

Yes. Any added square footage needs a building permit, and the plans have to meet setback and flood zone rules. Garages, carports, and enclosed patios count too. We prepare the paperwork, file it, and schedule the inspections, so you aren't making trips to the permit office.

How does a sunroom hold up in Louisiana heat?

It depends on how it's built. A sunroom with insulated glass, a real roof, and its own cooling stays comfortable most of the year. A simple screened or single-pane enclosure will be hot by June. We'll explain the difference in cost and comfort so you can pick.
