Decks and Porches Baton Rouge Families Use All Year

Shade, a breeze, and boards that don't give under your feet — that is what makes a porch worth having.

In Baton Rouge, the back porch gets used most of the year — if it has shade and the boards are sound. We build new decks, covered porches, pergolas, and screened rooms, and we repair the ones that heat and rain have worn out. Most of our decks are framed in pressure-treated pine because it holds up to wet ground and bugs.

Bobby Smith has 19 years of construction experience, so the part you can't see — posts, footings, and the tie-in to your house — gets as much care as the part you walk on. You get one written scope and one price. Want a room that is fully closed in instead? Look at our home additions service for sunrooms and enclosed patios.

Porch Past Its Prime?

Signs Your Deck or Porch Needs Repair or Replacing

Outdoor wood takes a beating here. These are the problems we get called about most.

  1. Soft or Rotted Deck Boards

Boards that give underfoot usually mean water has gotten into the wood, and often the framing below.

  2. Wobbly Railings and Porch Steps

Loose rails and stairs are a fall risk. We rebuild them with solid posts and proper fasteners.

  3. No Shade on the Back Patio

A slab in full sun sits unused all summer. A patio cover or pergola fixes that.

  4. Mosquitoes Chasing You Indoors

Screening in a porch lets you sit outside at dusk without getting eaten alive.

  5. Leaning or Missing Fence Sections

Storms and rot take down wood fences. We replace posts and panels so the yard is closed in again.

Footings and posts go in first, then framing, boards, roof, railings, and stairs.

  4. Porch Walk-Around and Care Tips

We walk it with you, explain sealing and upkeep, and back the work with our warranty.

Outdoor Building in South Louisiana

What Baton Rouge Weather Does to Decks and Porches

Heat, rain, and bugs decide how long outdoor wood lasts here. We build with all three in mind.

Humidity and Wood Rot

Wood here rarely dries out fully. We leave gaps for airflow and keep framing off wet ground.

Summer Sun on Deck Boards

Strong sun dries and cracks unsealed boards. We explain when to stain or seal after the wood cures.

Termites and Outdoor Wood

Formosan termites go after untreated lumber. We use ground-contact treated posts where wood meets soil.

Pressure-Treated Pine Decking

Southern yellow pine is the common local choice — strong, easy to find, and treated to resist rot and insects.

Heavy Rain and Porch Roofs

Porch roofs need enough slope and proper flashing so afternoon downpours drain away from the house.

Screened Porches for Mosquito Season

Mosquitoes run most of the year here. Screens make a covered porch usable in the evening.

Deck & Porch Questions

Decks and Porches FAQs

What kind of wood do you use for decks in Baton Rouge?

Most decks here are built with pressure-treated southern yellow pine. It handles moisture and insects well and is easy to find locally. Posts that touch the ground get lumber rated for ground contact. If you want a different decking material, tell us and we will price it.

Can you repair my old deck, or does it need to be replaced?

It depends on the framing. If the posts and joists are solid, we can swap out bad boards, rails, and stairs and save you money. If the frame is rotted or pulling away from the house, a rebuild is safer. We check underneath before recommending either one.

Do I need a permit for a deck or covered porch?

Often, yes — mainly when the structure is attached to the house, has a roof, or sits well above the ground. Rules differ between East Baton Rouge and nearby parishes. We check what applies at your address and handle the permit and inspections when one is needed.

How soon can I stain or seal a new pressure-treated deck?

New treated lumber is wet from the treatment process and needs time to dry before it will take stain. That often means waiting several weeks or more, depending on the weather. A simple test: sprinkle water on a board. If it soaks in, the wood is ready.

Can you add a roof or screens to a patio I already have?

Yes. We build patio covers over existing concrete slabs and can screen in a porch that already has a roof. First we check that the slab and the house wall can carry the new posts and framing. Then you get a written price for the work.
